Places You Need to Visit in Ypres, Belgium

Introduction

Ypres, Belgium, also known as Ieper, is by far one of the most charming towns I have visited for many reasons. The buildings are beautiful and the atmosphere is vibrant. The rich history is fascinating and the ability of the community to rebuild itself following devastation and war is remarkable. If you are looking for a welcoming and fascinating destination to visit, I highly recommend visiting Ieper.

In Flanders Fields Museum

The In Flanders Fields Museum is an interesting and enlightening stop that brings the realities of the town’s history to the present. This museum is dedicated specifically to the study of the First World War. The In Flanders Fields Museum is a must-see destination for all individuals because the museum aims to portray a message of peace as part of an important social mission. The museum is in the reconstructed Cloth Hall of Ypres which symbolizes wartime hardship and recovery. There are many exhibits that each focus on different aspects of the Great War including The People, The Landscape, Fine Arts, and Remembrance.

In addition, the museum has a winding staircase where visitors can climb to the roof top and look over the city. The view from the top of the museum is breathtaking as you can see the beautiful architecture of the town from above. While possibly not as well known, this view is worth the climb if you find yourself in Ypres.

Restaurants & Cafes

Although Ypres is a must-see destination for individuals interested in history, the community is also vibrant with food and culture. Il Gusto d’Italia sits across from the In Flanders Field Museum. This cafe has the most delicious Belgian Waffles with countless different toppings. I also highly recommend indulging in some delicious ice cream and artesian chocolates from ‘t Hemelryck. These sweet treats paired with the beautiful streets of Ypres provide the longed-for European experience. For an evening meal, I highly recommend Markt22 as they have delicious food and welcoming staff. Ieper is filled with rich and delicious flavours!

The Menin Gate

To add to the historically rich community, the Menin Gate, a war memorial that stands at the entrance of Ieper, holds the names of thousands of soldiers who were lost to the war during the Ypres Salient in World War One. Every evening there is a Last Post Ceremony to commemorate the lost souls of the conflicts that took place in and around Ieper. This ceremony includes the laying of wreaths, The Last Post, and other forms of tribute towards the sacrifice of the many soldiers on the gate who have never been found. Exploring Ieper is a truly moving experience and I highly recommend attending The Last Post Ceremony and visiting the Menin Gate.

The Ieper Market Place

The marketplace in Ieper is located in front of the Cloth Hall of Ypres. With breathtaking buildings and stone walkways, the marketplace offers a gorgeous and historic experience. This marketplace is a vibrant area where you can meet with friends, explore, or even attend the Saturday Market. Additionally, the gorgeous fountain located in the market square, makes this an ideal location for beautiful photos. Also, the streets surrounding the square are filled with souvenir shops and chocolates which provides the perfect opportunity to purchase some mementos.
