Frost Festival Regina:
How to Enjoy a Canadian Winter
Introduction
The Frost Festival in Regina, Saskatchewan offers several fun winter activities for all ages. This festival brings a sense of excitement to the harsh Canadian prairie winter while encouraging people to venture outside for some enjoyment. The Frost Festival is split into four different areas of the city called hubs. These areas are the REAL, Wascana, Downtown, and Warehouse hubs. These hubs offer a range of activities from skating to entertainment. This post will focus on the REAL (Regina Exhibition Association Limited) hub to provide you with a better idea of whether the Frost Festival is worth braving the cold. While there are other activities at Frost @ REAL the following are my favorite. One thing to note is that you must buy passes for the REAL hub that vary in price based on age. GLOW 2022 & GLOW 2023
I attended both the 2022 and 2023 Frost Festivals at the REAL hub. If you’re looking for a magical winter wonderland with the perfect photo location to capture cute pictures, the REAL hub is the location for you. GLOW offers opportunities for gorgeous photos with beautiful light displays. In 2022, the theme of GLOW was travel and when you entered you were given a fake passport. As you walked through the lights you would move through displays from monuments around the world such as the Eiffel Tower and the London Bridge. Every time you moved into a new light display for a different part of the world, you would get a stamp on your passport. Overall, Glow was enjoyable and fun for all ages!
Ice Sculptures, Ice Slides, & the Snow Maze
Located in Confederation Park were ice sculptures, ice slides, and a snow maze. From dragons to life-sized trucks, these sculptures were amazing to witness. The snow slides were loads of fun, but I heavily recommend ski pants as they are very chilly. In addition to these activities and sights, the area included a few firepits and warming stations. I recommend the REAL hub, especially for families as there are activities and sights for all ages. Including the nearby SGI Chalet where you can warm up with food, drinks, and live entertainment!
MOSTOS: Indigenous Village & Art
While walking through Frost @ REAL in Confederation Park, be sure to take note of the gorgeous artwork located around the park. This artwork adds to the vibrant experience of the festival while sharing culture and history with visitors. Also located at REAL is the MOSTOS: Indigenous Village where you can listen to educational teachings and watch performances such as the Kawacatoose Boyz Singers and Dancers. When visiting Frost @ REAL, the MOSTOS Village is an important and beautiful experience.
Frost on Ice
What better way to celebrate winter than with some beautiful ice dancing? Included in the price to enter Frost @ REAL is admission to Frost on Ice. Elvis Stojko along with several other world-renowned skaters took to the ice with their impressive skills. Frost on Ice is an amazing experience. From the fun music to the breathtaking jumps and spins, this show leaves you wanting more. The show is approximately an hour long so it is a good length for the whole family, and you can purchase popcorn and other treats to enjoy while watching.
Fireworks
On the last night of Frost @ REAL there was a spectacular firework display. When entering the park, we were given a free bracelet with the Frost logo that lights up with the bangs of the fireworks. While these bracelets don’t seem extraordinary, they create loads of fun that add to the excitement of the festival. With fun and popular music, the whole family is sure to have a good time as they watch the fireworks pop to the beat of the music!
Conclusion
Frost Festival Regina is worth braving the cold as there are many fun and exciting activities to enjoy. During the Canadian prairie winters, it is easy to sit inside and avoid the cold, but you will not want to miss this winter festival and all the enjoyment that accompanies it.
