Introduction
You’re planning a trip to Rome!
You must be so excited but potentially overwhelmed by the vast amount of research that goes into planning a trip.
Hopefully, this post can help clear up any questions you may have about the Roma Pass so you can determine if it’s worth the money and relieve some of the stress of trip planning.
What is the Roma Pass?
The Roma Pass is a pass that tourists can purchase that provides discounted access to archeological sites, events, and public transit. The pass is a collaboration between the Rome City Council, the Ministry of Arts and Culture, and public transit authorities.

Where Do I Purchase a Roma Pass?
The Roma Pass can either be purchased online or at Tourist Infopoints at various locations around the city of Rome.
If you are interested, you can purchase a Roma Pass online here through Get Your Guide. If you purchase a pass in advance online, it is not a downloadable ticket. You have to visit an Infopoint once you arrive in Rome and show proof of purchase to receive your prepaid passes.
If you are planning to purchase a pass when you arrive in Rome, some of the more popular Tourist Infopoints that you may come across on your itinerary include Termini Train Station – Galleria Gommata, Via Marco Mighetti- Via del Corso, Castel Sant’Angelo, Ciampino- International Arrivals, and Leonardo Da Vinci Airport- International Arrivals.
Tourist companies in Rome with offices in the airport and train stations also offer the passes but they usually cost more when purchased from a third party. Therefore, make sure you are purchasing a pass from one of the Tourist Infopoints that are provided by the city of Rome to ensure you are getting the best value for your money.

What Types of Passes are There?
There are two different types of passes that you can purchase, either a 48-hour or 72-hour pass. The type of pass you purchase depends on how long you plan to be in Rome.
The 48-hour pass includes 48 hours of public transportation on ATAC buses and the underground network system. This pass also includes free access to one museum or archeological sight from the red section on a color-coded list that is included with your pass. The 48-hour pass also includes reductions to other museum entries, events, and services from the yellow and grey lists on the color-coded list.
The 72-hour pass includes 72 hours of public transportation on ATAC buses and the underground network system. In addition, you have free access to the first two museums or archeological sights you visit from the red list on the color-coded sheet that comes with your pass.
The list that comes with the physical pass is written in Italian and English with a map of the city on the other side. The list also includes the letters and names of the stops that you need to take if using the underground network system to arrive at the archeological sight or museum you are looking for.
These passes start once you activate the pass either at an attraction or the first time you use the pass on public transportation.

What Can I Do With my Roma Pass?
As mentioned above, you have access to both ATAC buses and the underground transportation network. This was probably the most useful part of our passes as we traveled everywhere using the underground network system which was easy to access and navigate!
Some of the archaeological sights and museums included on the red list are:
- Museo Di Roma
- Colosseo (Colosseum)
- Museo Di Villa Torlina
- Palatino- Foro Romano
- Museo Di Roma in Trastevere
Please note that this pass includes entry to one or two of these sights or others from the Roma Pass list but does not include a tour. If you want a guided or self-led tour you will need to book it through a tour provider.
Should I Purchase a Roma Pass?
As a tourist in Rome, I found the pass extremely helpful, and it made taking public transportation less stressful. Whether you purchase the pass or not is truly dependent on your travel itinerary while in Rome!
I do recommend researching what sights or museums you will have access to with your pass, in advance and including this in your travel itinerary to get the most out of the money you’re spending on a pass. As opposed to using the pass solely for public transport.
I was constantly on the move and visiting different sights and this pass met my needs perfectly!
