New Zealand North Island: Bucket List

Introduction

If you’re visiting New Zealand’s North Island you must visit the below destinations. The North Island is filled with beauty and adventure. If you are looking for a beautiful country to visit where you can enjoy nice weather and explore gorgeous views, New Zealand is definitely the country you should visit!

Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand North Island: The Hamilton Gardens

The Hamilton Gardens are a great stop if you are searching for a peaceful and gorgeous experience. Stroll around several gardens from a few different collections including the Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, and Cultivar Collections. Personally, I really enjoyed the Paradise Collection which includes the Italian Renaissance Garden, Modernist Garden, Chinese Scholars’ Garden, and Indian Char Bagh Garden. Hamilton Gardens also has seasonal displays and gardens that will vary depending on what time of year you visit. In addition, you can rent the gardens for an event or wedding. This destination is a must-see location that allows you to connect with nature and relax.

New Zealand North Island: Matai Maori Experience & Dinner Buffet

This cultural experience takes you back in time to a Maori Village with a number of enjoyable activities and experiences. This experience includes a welcome ceremony, a traditional hangi meal, an educational walk through nature, an opportunity to learn about the Maori culture, and the ability to witness warriors paddling down Wai-o-Whiro Stream. Witness traditional dances and songs while learning about the lives of people in the many villages that populated the area. This experience is enjoyable for all while offering a greater understanding of the area and its culture to visitors.

New Zealand North Island: Frying Pan Lake

Frying Pan Lake is a gorgeous destination with an interesting history. If you are looking for surreal views of nature, this lake is the place to visit. The Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley, also referred to as Frying Pan Lake, was formed after Mount Tarawera exploded and became the largest volcanic eruption in New Zealand. The temperature of the water is deadly but from a distance Frying Pan Lake is gorgeous. This destination is a stop you cannot miss on a New Zealand road trip.

New Zealand North Island: Te Wairoa

When Mount Tarawera erupted in 1886 the village of Te Wairoa was covered in mud, ash, and rocks. The town, also known as Buried Village, is now abandoned and habitats continue to be buried in mud excluding the huts that have been excavated and provide visitors with an idea of life before this natural disaster. You can tour this village and learn more about the eruption at the museum nearby. This attraction is haunting but fascinating and provides insight into New Zealand’s history and culture.

New Zealand North Island: Zorb Balls

Given New Zealand’s reputation for adventure, you must try the Zorb Balls in Rotorua. What are Zorb Balls? They are giant inflatable balls that you and your friends or family can get in and roll down Mount Ngongotaha. While this activity sounds crazy, it is a lot of fun. Zorb Balls offers four fun and exhilarating tracks to roll down. There is also 40 litres of fresh water in the Zorb Ball making it feel like a wild water slide. In the winter this water is warm while in the summer it’s cool. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop laughing and sliding while rolling down these courses! This activity is definitely one you won’t forget.

New Zealand North Island: Auckland Sky Tower

A common and gorgeous stop is the Auckland Sky Tower. Standing 328m tall this tower offers a gorgeous view of the city. When you venture up the tower you will find seating and delicious dining options that pair nicely with the view. This tower allows visitors a 360-degree view of the city including sights like the Auckland Harbour and ancient volcanos. I highly recommend having a delicious coffee from the Sky Tower Café while you absorb the beauty of Auckland. The Sky Tower is also a gorgeous sight to see from afar when taking in the Auckland skyline. Either way, this tower should be added to your New Zealand bucket list as it offers beautiful and picturesque views of the city.
